Why do I need to build a Business?

When we take a look at businesses we see that a lot of them have the same parts which make them successful. Along with many other things, they have strong branding, have the ability to scale up and grow and they fulfil a need that is going unsatisfied for the customer.  

Its interesting to think of building a business to be similar to building a house. You have to build and put in place all the processes that your business does every day. It will take time, a lot of planning and hard work to build. You need to have strong foundations and build each process brick by brick. There is no short cut if you want to get the house and business that you want.

What do I need to build?

You will need to build all the process that your business will do from collecting money that is owed to making sure that you can attract new customers. They need to be written down so that your staff can follow the process that you want them to. That your business does things the way you want them. It feels like you, it does things the way that you want.

These processes may be made easier by using software, but you need to decide which one you will use and how you will build that in to the processes that you follow.

You need to make sure that the processes that you have work. Does the process you work for creating work for clients actually work? Does it deliver on time and to the standard that your customer needs?

I don’t know where to start?

If you don’t have knowledge how to build a house it can be daunting to think about. There is so much to consider and do. It is the same with your business. You have to get the company formed, get your books done, get customers to work for, get staff to help you with the work, get offices or workspaces to work from. The list is endless.

You need help doing all this work and a process to work through to make sure all the things are done properly. You need to be able to make sure that your business is set up to successful, that you can scale it up and grow.

You need a business that can grow

You need to be able to have a business that can be scaled up. That is, that you can serve more customers than you are currently. Can you grow your business without affecting the quality of service that you give to your clients? If the business has grown from being just you doing all of the work, can you take on staff and make sure that they can do the work to the same quality?

You need to build the foundations for your business

To be able to do this you need to have strong process and systems in place for your business. You need to be able to deliver on the work for your customers. That is your team need to be able to produce the work that your customers like and on time. You need to have a list of processes to make sure that they can do this.

That could be meetings with the customer to find out what they requirements are for the work. A process of presenting a couple of designs to them to get a feel of which one they prefer and then completing the project with check-ins to the customer to make sure they are happy with the progress.

You need to have processes in place for everything that your business does

You also need to have processes for making sure that the staff are clear on the work that they have to do, to manage the work between themselves and also that they are doing the work the way you want it to be done.

This process needs to be repeated for all of the things that your business needs to do.

Keep your team happy

Be able to deliver the work on time and of good quality

All of the things that your company does needs to be written down and set up by you. So it is done the way you want it.

Getting this will make sure the work is done right

A lot of this work is foundational work. It is doing the simple things well. Making sure that you stay involved with your team. That you can give them guidance on what they need to do and that the process you want them to go through are clear and written down.

This is simply building your business brick by brick putting in place all the processes that you need to be successful. They need to be put in place to give your staff clarity on how the work needs to be done and what needs to be done.

Building this will take time. You need a plan and a process to work through. You need to break it down so it does not appear too much to do at once.

What if I don’t do this?

If you don’t do these processes you will end up with a business that is chaotic and still demands too much of your time. Your staff need guidance what to do, if that is not written down and clearly given to them, they will ask you each time that they need help. You will have to spend your time constantly telling your staff what to do.

Your business will be constantly doing this last minute. It will not have a clear process to collect the money owed, how to get the work out to your customers it will be a mess and all left to chance.

If you don’t get the processes written down and tell them clearly to your team you will not be able to grow your business effectively and you will always be constantly managing your team.

Get these processes written down and tell them to your staff

You need to have them written down and documented your team will be able to work by themselves and get on with the work that you have given them. They will know what they need to do and when. You will have processes to make this easier and so that you can help them when they really need it.

You can give them advice on how you want the work to be done and you can get regular updates to make sure it is going according to your instructions.

You need to make sure that your staff are doing the work

When you have written down the processes and guidance for your staff you will need to make sure that they follow this guidance. You need to hold regular meetings to make sure that they do what they tell them.

You need to have regular meetings with them to make sure that they are doing the work, it is being done the way you want and what progress they are making. So that you can make sure it is done the way you want and it will be done on time.

You need to build your business to have the freedom that you want

Once you have this you can have the freedom that you want and time to enjoy your life and do the creative work that you love. This is the most important reason to do this work, to live the life that you want and to enjoy time with your family and friends.  To go on holiday and see the world and have great moments with your partner and family.
